Shiitake mushrooms are grown in Japan, where they are planted on logs of oak and other trees, one of them the shii--thus the name shiitake or shii mushroom. The Chinese were probably the first to cultivate the shiitake. It is primarily found in recipes for Asian dishes, but try INDIA TREE Shitake Mushrooms in Western as well as Asian dishes for a different taste.
