Description
Licorice root is a different plant. Most sweets sold as licorice are flavored with anise instead, and this is it – small sweet seeds with a clean, concentrated licorice note. Not related to star anise either, despite the shared name and the similar taste.
Anise is more a baking spice than a savory one: pizzelle, biscotti, springerle, pfeffernüsse, pan de muerto. It's also behind ouzo, sambuca, pastis, and raki. Crush the seeds lightly before they go into a dough.
